Antique Akhal Oasis Tekke Torba
Here is a classical Tekke six gull torba from the Akhal Oasis. It measures 39 X 122 cm. and is finely knotted at 242 KPSI. Like most dowry weavings from the Akhal Oasis, it is single wefted and thus extremely supple. The Akhal Oasis was renowned for its great madder reds and crisp clear yellows and this torba has the best of both with a rich warm cherry red field and a crisp clear yellow used in accents. There is also a deep forest green, a resonant royal blue, a rich apricot, a deep blue, a dark brown, and a natural white of fabulous quality. The wool in this torba is so fine it feels like velvet.
The Akhal Oasis is a strip of land flanked by the Caspian Sea, a desert, and mountains. As such it was quite isolated, had little by way of hinterland, and was not on a trade route as was Merv. The arable land fringe, immediately north of the mountains and colloquially known as the “Skirt” (Atek), was watered by rivers and streams coming down from the mountains and creating a series of oases. This wonderful arable land was an isolated Turkman haven and Tekke tribal traditions were well maintained there.
This torba can change your mood just by taking it outside, under the sun, and watching it shine. This undoubtedly is a special dowry weaving and a fine collector’s piece. This torba dates to the middle third of the 19th century. It is a rare gem of Tekke weaving!
